Duel at Dawn

Duel at Dawn is a Hacksaw Gaming Western from November 2024, played on a 5x5 grid with 19 paylines. It brings back the DuelReels from Wanted Dead or a Wild, VS symbols that become wild reels with multipliers of up to 200x, and adds an Outlaw who shoots Wilds. Both bonuses can be bought, and wins cap at 15,000x. Our Duel at Dawn demo test ran 100 base spins at $1, both buys and all three FeatureSpins modes.

What is the Duel at Dawn slot about?

The reels sit in a weathered wooden frame in front of a desert canyon at sunset, and a gunslinger in a red poncho and wide hat stands to the left with a revolver drawn. Both bonuses move the scene to a moonlit night.

Line wins start on the leftmost reel, run across 19 fixed lines and need 3 of a kind. At a $1 bet, the four card hands, pairs of cards marked with a suit, pay $0.10 to $1. Wagon wheels and ram skulls pay $0.50 to $3, cowboy hats and crossed revolvers $1 to $6, and the sheriff badge $2 to $10, the same as five Wilds.

The WILD stands in for every paytable symbol. A 29% hit rate is the figure all three review sites we checked give, and 25 of our 100 base spins paid.

Duel at Dawn bonus features

DuelReels

A VS symbol expands only if the full reel would then be part of a win. It becomes a wild DuelReel on which The Outlaw and The Sheriff each hold a multiplier, and the survivor's applies to every win through that reel: 2x to 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 75x, 100x or 200x. Only one VS lands per reel, and several DuelReels in one win add their multipliers.

The Outlaw

An Outlaw symbol expands into a full wild reel with a revolver holding 1 to 6 bullets, and fires one Wild onto the grid for each. Up to two Outlaws can land on a spin, one per reel, and they never hit the same squares or each other. Each Outlaw reel carries a multiplier from the same list, and several in one win add up. VS and Outlaw symbols never land together.

Wild Wild West

With three FS scatters at once, you get 10 free spins with the base game's features, more VS and Outlaw symbols and a better chance of high multipliers. Two more FS symbols add 2 spins, and three add 4.

Dusk 'til Dawn

Four FS scatters award 10 free spins in which VS symbols land only during DuelSpins, up to four. Each unlocks when Outlaws shoot a full revolver of six Wilds, plays straight after the free spin that earned it without using one up, and adds 3 free spins. The four guarantee at least 2, 3 and 4 VS symbols, then all 5, and at most two unlock on one spin.

The review sites we checked describe that unlock in different ways, and the rules do not say whether the six must come on one spin. Our capture settles it: between spins, the first of four revolvers on the tracker had three of its six chambers filled, so the count carries over.

Bonus buys and FeatureSpins

Both rounds can be bought, and the rules describe no Hidden Epic Bonus and no gamble. As bonus buys, Wild Wild West costs 100x at 96.31% RTP and Dusk 'til Dawn 200x at 96.3%, both labelled Very high volatility.

Three FeatureSpins modes stay on until DISABLE is pressed. BonusHunt, at 3x a spin, raises the bonus chance fivefold (96.32%, Very high). Deadly Duels and Lone Outlaw cost 60x each and land no FS symbols: the first guarantees at least two VS symbols a spin (96.35%), the second at least one Outlaw with two or more bullets (96.31%), both labelled High.

The rules allow bets of $0.10 to $2,000, while the review sites we checked stop at $100, and the 15,000x cap applies in every mode.

Our Duel at Dawn demo test

Every round of our session on Hacksaw Gaming's official demo, in US dollars from the $5,000 balance, matched the game server's log. Our base game paid $105.00 for 100 spins at $1, from 25 wins, 18 of them under $1, and nothing at all came from spin 52 to spin 65.

Four spins carried that total. Spins 46 and 68 paid $40.00 and $20.00 with a 5x wild reel on reel 2, spin 29 triggered Wild Wild West for $24.50, and on spin 5 a 2x Outlaw paid $10.00. They are single results: the other 96 spins returned $10.50.

Ten BonusHunt FeatureSpins at $3 paid once, $0.60, and the tenth landed two FS coins but no third.

Ten Deadly Duels FeatureSpins at $60 all paid, from $9.00 to $442.00, and returned $834.50 for $600, a single 10-spin result. The $442.00 eighth spin was not captured and comes from the server log; the other nine returned $392.50 for $540.

Ten Lone Outlaw FeatureSpins at $60 also paid every time, from $14.20 to $539.00, and returned $1,109.80, again a single 10-spin result. The third spin had Outlaw reels at 10x and 4x and paid $539.00; the other nine returned $570.80 for $540.

The $100 Wild Wild West buy returned $57.50 over 10 free spins. One spin paid $30.00, and a 4x Outlaw reel fired Wilds during the round.

The $200 Dusk 'til Dawn buy paid $57.00 on its second free spin with a 10x Outlaw reel. A DuelSpin with at least 2 VS symbols unlocked after the sixth, adding 3 spins, and the round ended after 13 free spins at $108.30.

By the server log we staked $1,630.00 and got $2,215.70 back, in one demo session that ended at $5,585.70; without the $539.00 and $442.00 spins, the rest returned $1,234.70 for $1,510. The rules screen showed 96.3%. Dusk 'til Dawn never triggered on its own, and these samples cannot measure the RTP or the volatility.

Is Duel at Dawn worth trying?

The two wild reels are the hook. A DuelReel appears only when it pays, an Outlaw reel always fires at least one Wild of its own, and two reels of the same kind in one win add their multipliers, each up to 200x. That gives even the base game a real ceiling: 15,000x, open in every mode.

Dusk 'til Dawn builds toward its DuelSpins, each with more guaranteed VS symbols and three extra spins, while Wild Wild West simply raises the odds of the same features. The dearer round costs twice as much for that ladder of DuelSpins.

The cost is a lean base game. Four card hands pay at most the bet for five, wins start on reel 1, and without a wild reel most spins return little. The two feature modes skip that wait, at 60 times the bet a spin.

The intro banner rates the volatility 4 out of 5, the rules give no word for it, and the buy cards say Very high for BonusHunt and both buys and High for the other two modes. The review sites we checked list 94.27%, 92.28% and 88.37% RTP versions as well as 96.3%.
