Return of The Green Knight puts everything on its wild multiplier: x2 to x100 on any spin's wilds, a ladder from x2 to x100 across 5 free spins, and Shield Spins that lock the current step while wilds stay put, toward a 40,000x cap. The rounds are short, base pays are small, there is no buy, and the game states no RTP.

Return of The Green Knight: Full Review

Return of The Green Knight is Play'n GO's October 2023 slot about the Green Knight returning years after Sir Gawain's challenge: a 5x3 grid with 20 fixed lines, where the wilds on any spin can carry a multiplier of x2 to x100. Free spins push that multiplier from x2 to x100, Shield Spins lock it, and the cap is 40,000x. Our test of the Return of The Green Knight slot demo ran 100 spins at $1 each.

What is Return of The Green Knight?

The reels stand in a gold frame in an autumn forest, with a stone castle and an arched bridge behind them. A row of five shields above the reels shows the multipliers, x2, x5, x10, x25 and x100, next to a green logo wrapped in leaves.

The cast are painted portraits: a young knight in armour, a sorceress, a crowned king and a dark-haired lady, with A, K, Q, J and 10 carved into stones below them. The wild is a gold shield over crossed swords, and the scatter is the Green Knight himself, an antlered helm with an axe.

FluxPlays demo test, 20 October 2026.

All 20 lines are always on. Wins run left to right on adjacent reels from the first reel, each line pays only its best win, and the scatter pays anywhere.

The paytable shows its pays at the current bet. At $1, five wilds on a line pay $100, four $5 and three $2.50. The young knight pays $25, $5 and $2.50, the sorceress $12.50, $2.50 and $1.20, and the king and the lady $7.50, $1.50 and $1 each.

The stones pay less: A $4, 80 cents and 40 cents; K and Q $3, 60 cents and 30 cents; J and 10 $2, 40 cents and 20 cents. Five scatters anywhere pay $100, four $5 and three $2.50.

Five bet buttons offer 0.60 to 1.60 around the default, with minus and plus for the rest. Behind them the game server offers 22 coin values between 0.01 and 10.00, ten coins a spin, for stakes of $0.10 to $100. A win is collected when the next spin starts, and there is no gamble.

Return of The Green Knight base spin 48 at a $1 bet: a wild on reel 2, the king, the lady and the young knight, shield bar x2 to x100, WIN 0.30Base spin 48 of 100 at $1, settled: a wild on reel 2 under the x2 to x100 shield bar and WIN 0.30. FluxPlays demo test, 20 October 2026.

Wild multipliers

The wild substitutes for every symbol except the scatter. On any spin, a multiplier of x2, x5, x10, x25 or x100 can be applied to all the wilds that land, and a win that uses one is multiplied by the value on it. Multipliers do not add up on the same line, so only one counts per win.

The paytable lists what that means for the wilds' own pays: five x2 wilds are worth $200 at $1, five x10 wilds $1,000, and five x100 wilds $10,000.

Return of The Green Knight Wild Multipliers paytable: multipliers of x2 to x100 on all wilds in a spin, five x100 wilds paying 10000.00The Wild Multipliers page of the paytable in our demo session: the wild's own pays at x2 to x100, up to 10000.00 for five. FluxPlays demo test, 20 October 2026.

Free spins with a rising multiplier

Three or more scatters award 5 free spins on top of their scatter pay. During the round every wild that lands carries the multiplier, and it climbs one step with each spin: x2 on the first, then x5, x10 and x25, and x100 on the fifth.

FluxPlays demo test, 20 October 2026.

Shield Spins

Two or more scatters during the free spins award 5 Shield Spins, plus their scatter pay. The multiplier from the free spin that triggered them is locked for all five, and every wild that lands stays in place until the Shield Spins end.

No scatters land in Shield Spins, so they cannot retrigger. When they finish, the free spins carry on if any are left. A late trigger matters most: two scatters on the fourth free spin would lock x25 for five spins of gathering wilds.

RTP, volatility and max win

No RTP appears in the help text, the paytable or on the official game page. Review sites list 96.27% as the top version, with 94.26%, 91.28%, 87.25% and 84.24% versions casinos can run, and most rate it high volatility; the practice demo does not show which version it uses.

The paytable states the cap: "Win up to 40000x your normal bet!", $40,000 at our $1. There is no bonus buy, no ante and no gamble.

Played on Play'n GO's official practice demo in one session, from a 25,000.00 balance. The demo shows credits without a currency label; we count one credit as one dollar. Every spin was at 1.00, 10 coins of 0.10 on the 20 fixed lines; spins started one at a time by a script clicking the spin button, without Auto Play. Return of The Green Knight has no bonus buy, ante, paid mode or gamble. On spin 100 the screen showed a $1.00 line win that the demo never credited after an error on the collect; it is counted as $0. Free spins and Shield Spins did not trigger, so they are described from the rules. The rules state no RTP, so no version is shown. Totals from the server log: $100.00 staked, $25.30 returned, ending at 24,925.30 to the cent. A sample of 100 spins says nothing reliable about the RTP or the volatility.

The demo's credits carry no currency, and we take each one as a dollar. It opened on 25,000.00 with the 1.00 button lit, 10 coins of 0.10, and all 100 spins ran at that bet in a single session of about 20 minutes. A script started each spin, without Auto Play.

The server log gives $100.00 staked, $25.30 returned and 24,925.30 at the end, matching the screen. On spin 100, the last one, the screen showed a $1.00 line win, but the demo reported an error when collecting it and never credited the dollar. We count that win as $0.

Of 36 winning spins, 26 paid under $1, twelve of them 30 cents and eight 20 cents, and 90 of the 100 spins returned less than their cost. The best were $2.60 on spin 6, $2.50 on spin 86 and $2.40 on spin 47. The longest losing run was 6 spins, and it came three times: 13 to 18, 25 to 30 and 38 to 43.

The first 50 spins returned $15.00 and the last 50 $10.30. The balance stood highest at 24,999.00 after spin 1 and closed on its low.

Neither the free spins nor Shield Spins triggered, so both come from the rules here, and nothing came near a multiplied big win. A hundred spins this quiet cannot measure the RTP or the volatility.

Is Return of The Green Knight worth trying?

The multiplier ladder is the whole design. Every free spin raises it, and Shield Spins freeze it while wilds pile up, so a round that goes right late can stack held wilds at x25 or x100. That is how a 20-line game reaches a 40,000x cap.

The cost is everything around it. The free spins last only 5 spins, line pays at $1 are mostly cents, and in the base game a multiplier only helps when wilds take part in a win. Our session never saw a feature.

Rise of Merlin is Play'n GO's other Arthurian tale in this batch, and by both games' rules it builds its bonus on a different idea: 8 free spins on 10 lines with a randomly chosen expanding symbol, and more symbols per retrigger, capped at 5,000x. Here the bonus is shorter and the wilds carry the multiplier, with eight times that cap.

Our sessions returned $48.50 in Rise of Merlin, with one free spins round, and $25.30 here with none, single sessions that show how each game ran rather than which pays more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play the Return of The Green Knight demo for free?+

Yes. This page loads Play'n GO's practice version, free and without an account. It holds 25,000 credits with no currency sign and opens with the 1.00 button lit, among 0.60, 0.80, 1.20 and 1.60. In our session the demo once showed a $1.00 win it then failed to credit after an error, on the last spin.

How do Shield Spins work in Return of The Green Knight?+

They start inside the free spins, when two or more scatters land. You get 5 Shield Spins at the multiplier of the free spin that triggered them, and every wild that lands is held until they end. No scatters appear, so they cannot retrigger, and any free spins left continue afterwards. We did not reach them in 100 spins.

How does the wild multiplier work in the free spins?+

Three or more scatters give 5 free spins plus their scatter pay. Every wild that lands in the round carries the multiplier, which starts at x2 on the first spin and steps up on each one after it, through x5, x10 and x25, to x100 on the fifth. A win with a wild is multiplied by the value it shows.

Is Return of The Green Knight a sequel to The Green Knight?+

Yes. Play'n GO's story picks up years after Sir Gawain's challenge, when the Green Knight returns, and the game follows its 2021 slot The Green Knight. We have not tested the earlier game, so every figure on this page comes from the 2023 game's own rules and our test of it.

What are the RTP and max win of Return of The Green Knight?+

The paytable caps wins at 40,000x the bet, $40,000 at $1. The game states no RTP, and neither does Play'n GO's page; review sites list 96.27% as the top of five versions, down to 84.24%. The demo does not show which version it runs, so check the game information at your casino.
