Wild West Gold is Pragmatic Play's 2020 Western slot, the original rather than Wild West Gold Megaways or Wild West Gold Blazing Bounty. It plays on 5x4 reels with 40 fixed lines, its sheriff's-badge wilds on reels 2 to 4 carry 2x, 3x or 5x on every spin, and in free spins every wild sticks with its multiplier. What is the Wild West Gold slot about?

The reels hang in a wooden frame on a dusty main street of saloons, with steer skulls and oil lamps at the top corners and the gold logo between two revolvers. A BUY FREE SPINS sign sits on the left, and free spins move the town to night under a full moon.

Wins pay left to right on 40 fixed lines across four rows, and only the best win per line is paid. At a $1 bet five sheriffs pay $20, outlaws $12.50, the cowgirl in the white hat $7.50 and the cowgirl with a knife $5. Gold bags pay $3.75 and gun belts $2.50 for five, A and K $1.50, and Q, J and 10 $1.

The wild is a silver sheriff's badge marked WILD, and it lands only on reels 2, 3 and 4. Each one carries a 2x, 3x or 5x, base game included, and the win line spells out the sum: our spin 15 read PAYS $0.50 x 5 = $2.50. With several wilds on one line the multipliers are added, so three 5x wilds give a line 15x at most.

Wild West Gold bonus features

Scatters and 8 free spins

Canyon-sunset scatters land only on reels 1, 3 and 5, and three of them start 8 free spins on special reels. The round can also be bought for 100x the bet, $100 at $1. There is no ante bet or other special bet.

Sticky wilds

In free spins every wild that lands on reels 2, 3 or 4 stays until the round ends, with the multiplier it showed on landing. Wilds can only pile up, and since their multipliers add on a line, each new sticky wild lifts every later line that passes through it.

Sheriff stars for extra spins

A gold sheriff's star can appear on top of any symbol during the round, sticky wilds included. Two, three, four or five stars on one spin add 4, 8, 12 or 20 free spins. The rules call the star a scatter overlay, and it is the only way to extend the round.

The 10x minimum and the 10,000x cap

A free spins round that pays less than 10x the bet is topped up to 10x, so a bought round returns at least $10 of its $100. At the other end wins stop at 10,000x the bet, a figure the intro screen repeats, and a round that reaches it ends with any spins left forfeited.

Bets, RTP and volatility

The demo's rules allow bets of $0.20 to $240, above the $100 the review sites list. They give one RTP, 96.51%, with no separate figure for the buy, and two review sites add a 95.56% version. The rules also show a LOW VOLATILITY badge, where every review site we checked says high; our table uses the game's label.

Our Wild West Gold demo test

We lowered the opening $2.00 bet to $1.00, which cut the buy price from $200 to $100, and played 100 base spins one at a time without autoplay. Then we bought free spins once.

The base game paid little and often. 38 spins won something: 24 under $1, 11 from $1 to $5, and three above that. The longest run without a win was 5 spins, the opening five, the shortest dry run of any game in this batch so far.

Spin 21 brought the best line win, $8.85. Two x3 wilds landed on reels 2 and 3, and on one line they added up to x6: PAYS $0.75 x 6 = $4.50. Other lines on the same spin made up the rest.

Free spins came on their own on spin 79. Sticky x2 wilds built up over the 8 spins, most of the money arrived on the last one, and the round paid $16.50. That was a single result; without it the other 99 spins returned $44.25.

The $100 buy brought three scatters and the same 8 spins. Seven paid nothing; on the last, a sticky 2x and a 5x wild were on the reels as line wins began counting, and the round ended on exactly $10.00, the 10x minimum.

The game server's log records $10.00 for that spin, and the screen was still counting when captured, so we cannot tell whether the line wins reached $10.00 on their own or the minimum topped them up.

No star added spins in either round, and we never saw more than one on screen at a time. The session, part by part:

Over the session $200.00 went in and $70.75 came back, and the server balance finished at $99,870.75 from $100,000.00, as our log shows. A hundred spins and one bought round cannot measure a 96.51% RTP or test the low label.

Is Wild West Gold worth trying?

It suits players who like steady, readable play. Wilds carry a multiplier on every spin, the win line shows the sum, and our 38 paying spins and 5-spin longest gap sit well with the low label. In free spins every wild stays, so a round that collects wilds early lifts every later line, and the 10x minimum puts a floor under each round.

The ceiling depends on that build-up. Multipliers on a line are added, not multiplied, so a line tops out at 15x; the round opens with only 8 spins, and extra spins need two or more stars on one spin. A bought round costs 100x the bet while the rules only promise 10x back.
