Mustang Gold

Mustang Gold is Pragmatic Play's 2019 Western slot, the original rather than Mustang Gold Megaways. It runs on 5x3 reels with 25 fixed lines, where golden horseshoes carry cash values that a sheriff's star on reel 5 collects, and a horseshoe marked JACKPOT opens a pick game for fixed prizes of up to 1,000x the bet. The rules give a 96.53% RTP and low volatility, and the game's own screens promise up to 12,000x. We played 100 spins of the Mustang Gold slot demo at $1.

What is the Mustang Gold slot about?

The reels sit in an ornate silver frame against a red desert sunset, with a wooden fence and a cowboy hat at the edges. Four jackpot panels across the top show the prizes in cash at your bet, GRAND $1,000, MINOR $100, MINI $50 and MAJOR $200 at $1, and a banner between them rotates the game's messages.

The 25 lines are fixed and pay left to right from reel 1, one win per line. At a $1 bet five white mustangs pay $20, black horses $12, the cowboy $10 and the cowgirl $8, and A, K, Q and J pay $4 for five. Four of a kind pays only $0.60 to $2, and three pays $0.20 or $0.40, so most of the paytable's weight sits on fives.

The wild is the MUSTANG GOLD sign on reels 2 to 5, and it can land stacked, as on our spin 33. It stands in for the line symbols only, not for the campfire scatter, the horseshoes or the collect star.

Spin 33 of 100 at $1: a stacked MUSTANG GOLD wild on reel 3 and $2.40 in line wins. FluxPlays demo test, 18 October 2026.

Mustang Gold bonus features

Horseshoes and the collect star

Golden horseshoes, the money symbols, land on reels 1 to 4. Each takes a random value of 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 8x, 10x, 12x, 15x, 18x, 20x, 25x, 30x or 35x the bet, or shows JACKPOT.

Horseshoes pay nothing on their own. When a COLLECT sheriff's star lands on reel 5 in the same spin, every horseshoe value on screen is added up and paid, in the base game and in free spins alike.

The rules: horseshoes on reels 1 to 4, worth 1x to 35x, paid when a collect star lands on reel 5. FluxPlays demo test, 18 October 2026.

The Jackpot Reveal pick game

Each JACKPOT horseshoe that a collect star picks up starts one round of a pick game, and several play in turn. You pick from a grid of 12 horseshoes until three matching jackpot symbols show, and that prize is yours: MINI 50x, MINOR 100x, MAJOR 200x or GRAND 1,000x the bet. All four are fixed multiples of the bet, not progressive jackpots.

The rules: four fixed jackpots from 50x to 1,000x, won by matching three in the pick game. FluxPlays demo test, 18 October 2026.

Campfire free spins

Three campfire scatters on reels 2, 3 and 4 pay 1x the bet and start 8 free spins. The Money Collect stays active, the special reels carry more horseshoes and collect stars, and three more campfires add another 8 spins, with no limit on retriggers.

Spin 19 of 100 at $1: three campfires on reels 2, 3 and 4 start free spins. FluxPlays demo test, 18 October 2026.

Maximum win, bets and volatility

The rules state no maximum win and the game server sends none, but the intro screen and the banner above the reels both read WIN UP TO 12,000X BET, the figure in our table. Bets run from $0.25 to $250, above the $125 maximum the one review site we could read gives. There is no bonus buy, ante bet or special bet.

The rules page and intro screen show a LOW VOLATILITY badge, while that review site calls the game medium; we use the game's own label.

Our Mustang Gold demo test

We lowered the opening $2.00 bet to $1.00, which cut the jackpot panels to $50, $100, $200 and $1,000 with it, and played 100 spins one at a time without autoplay. With no buy in the game, the 100 spins were the whole test.

Wins came often but stayed small. 40 spins paid, 27 of them under $1 and none above $3.20, and the longest run without a win was 6 spins. The session returned $32.20, the lowest of any game in this batch.

Free spins came twice, on spins 19 and 25, each from three campfires and each 8 spins without a retrigger. They paid $2.40 and $3.20, the 1x scatter pay included; in the second round the scatters paid $1.00 and the spins $2.20. Without the two rounds the other 98 spins returned $26.60.

Three campfires: 8 free spins, with WIN $1.20 already on the panel. FluxPlays demo test, 18 October 2026.

The spin 25 round: $3.20 in all, our best result of the session. FluxPlays demo test, 18 October 2026.

The Money Collect paid once in the base game. On spin 70 a $3.00 horseshoe on reel 3 landed with a collect star on reel 5; we have no settled capture of it, and the game server's log shows the spin paid $3.00.

No JACKPOT horseshoe was collected, so we never saw the pick game, and neither free spins round retriggered. Altogether the 100 spins cost $100.00 and paid back $32.20, and the server balance closed at $99,932.20, in line with our log. That is far below a 96.53% RTP, and a hundred spins cannot measure the RTP or test the low label.

Is Mustang Gold worth trying?

Mustang Gold gives its base game more to do than many classics. A collect star and horseshoes can pay on any spin, a JACKPOT horseshoe can open the pick game without free spins, and the four prizes are fixed and shown in cash above the reels. The low label fits what we saw: 40 paying spins and no gap longer than 6.

The catch is how much each part needs. A horseshoe pays only when a collect star lands on reel 5 in the same spin, line pays are thin below five of a kind, and free spins open with 8. In our 100 spins the star met a horseshoe in the base game only once.

Wolf Gold, another Pragmatic Play classic we tested the same day, also plays on 5x3 reels with 25 lines and fixed jackpots. There six or more full moons start a respin round and the jackpots are 30x, 100x and 1,000x; here a single horseshoe pays as soon as a collect star joins it.
