Wolf Gold is Pragmatic Play's April 2017 desert slot, the original of the Wolf Gold line rather than its 4 Pack, Power Jackpot or Ultimate spin-offs. It plays on 5x3 reels with 25 fixed lines and a wolf wild, and any six full moons start a Money Respin with three fixed jackpots, the top one worth 1,000x the bet. The rules give a 96% RTP but no maximum win. We ran the Wolf Gold demo for 100 spins at $1.

What is the Wolf Gold slot about?

The reels sit in a sandstone frame against a desert canyon at dusk, with red rock towers on both sides and the first stars above. Three jackpot panels under the logo show their prizes in cash at your bet: $30, $100 and $1,000 at $1. A small PRAGMATIC PLAY mark sits in the bottom-left corner.

Wins pay left to right on 25 fixed lines, and only the highest win per line is paid. At a $1 bet the buffalo and the wolf both pay $20 for five, ahead of the eagle at $16, the horse at $12 and the cougar at $8. A, K, Q and J pay $2 for five; three pay $0.20, or $0.40 for the A.

The wolf is the wild and stands in for every symbol except the scatter and the moons. It can land stacked, as it did two high on spins 10 and 17 of our test, and a stack covers several of the 25 lines at once.

Money Respin and the three jackpots

The full moon is the money symbol and can land on any reel. Each one carries one of 16 values from 1x to 100x the bet, with nothing between 30x and 100x, or the Mini or Major jackpot. Six or more start the Money Respin once the line wins are paid. The reels switch to moons and blank spaces, only the moons stay, and three respins follow.

Every new moon stays and resets the count to three. The round ends when the respins run out or all 15 positions hold a moon, and then every value on the grid is added and paid. The Mini is worth 30x the bet and the Major 100x, both landing as moon values, while a full grid adds the 1,000x Mega on top. The respin can start during free spins too.

Free spins with a giant symbol

The scatter is a red rock formation that lands only on reels 1, 3 and 5. Three of them pay 1x the bet and award 5 free spins, in which reels 2, 3 and 4 spin together as one giant symbol on special reels. Every further three scatters add 3 spins, with no limit. One review site gives 6 free spins, but the game's rules say 5.

What the game does not state

Several figures that review sites quote are missing from the game itself. Its rules give no maximum win, no volatility rating and no bet range, and the game server sends no maximum-win figure. The review sites we checked put the maximum at 5,000x or 2,500x, so we quote neither; the largest prize the rules do name is the 1,000x Mega.

As for figures, Pragmatic Play's own game page gives only an RTP, 96.01% against the rules' 96%. On volatility, both review sites we checked say medium, though one also calls it low in its text, so treat that label as theirs, not the game's. There is no bonus buy, ante bet or special bet.

Our Wolf Gold demo test

We lowered the opening $2.00 bet to $1.00 and played 100 spins one at a time, without autoplay. Half of them paid: 50 wins, 37 under $1, eight from $1 to $5 and five above. The longest run without a win lasted only four spins. The 100 spins returned $173.20, and the server balance closed at $100,073.20, matching our log.

Spin 17 brought the best line hit. Wolves stood two high on reels 1 and 3, with eagles on reels 2, 4 and 5, and the lines paid $45.00, 45x the bet. A $1.00 moon sat on reel 2, and a single moon pays nothing on its own.

The Money Respin came twice. On spin 43 six moons worth $14.00 started it, three more joined, and the nine paid $23.00. Five spins later, on spin 48, six moons worth $37.00 grew to eleven, four positions short of the Mega, and paid $54.00, the best result of the test. Neither round held a Mini or Major moon.

Those three spins made $122.00 of the $173.20, and each is a one-off result. Without them the other 97 spins returned $51.20, so the steady small wins fell short of the stake on their own. By source, the session looked like this:

Free spins never triggered, so we never saw the giant symbol or a respin inside free spins, and no Mini, Major or Mega came up. A hundred spins cannot measure a 96% RTP, and this session's 173% return says nothing about it.

Is Wolf Gold worth trying?

Its appeal is how much happens without a bonus round. The 25 lines and stacked wolves give the base game plenty of small wins, and the Money Respin can start on any spin that lands six moons, with every new moon buying three more respins and the grid edging toward the 1,000x Mega. The jackpots are fixed multiples of the bet, so the panel always shows their worth.

The ceiling is the weak spot. Moon values stop at 100x, the jackpots are fixed at 30x, 100x and 1,000x, and the game names no maximum win. In our test most wins were smaller than the bet, 37 of 50; free spins start with just 5, and there is no buy, ante or special mode.

Sleeping Dragon Ultra Dark, a newer Pragmatic Play game we have tested, is built on the same two ideas: six or more coins start a respin round that resets to three, and free spins join reels 2, 3 and 4 into one giant symbol. It adds bonus buys and a 20,000x cap, and runs at 96.50%.

Golden Retriever, a Reel Kingdom game we have tested, has a respin of the same kind in its Hold & Spin round. There it starts from scatters with a reserved multiplier of x1, x3 or x10, and a full screen multiplies the coins and starts over instead of paying a jackpot.
