Our verdict
Scroll of Dead keeps the Book of Dead formula and saves its twist for the bonus: the sixth reel stays chained in the base game and opens in 8 free spins, where one random expanding symbol has six reels to fill and a full screen of queens reaches the 7,500x cap. The base game is lines, scarab pays and a card gamble, the bonus is short, and the game states no RTP.

Skip this if…
- You want all six reels on every spin: the sixth stays chained until free spins

Scroll of Dead: Full Review
Scroll of Dead is Play'n GO's May 2021 Egyptian slot in its Dead series: a 6x3 game with 10 lines whose sixth reel stays chained shut until the free spins. A golden scarab is both wild and scatter, and three or more open 8 free spins on all six reels with a randomly chosen expanding symbol. We spent 100 spins at $1 on the Scroll of Dead slot demo.

What is Scroll of Dead?
The reels stand in a torchlit temple hall under a red Scroll of Dead crest. Five of them spin in the base game; the sixth is a golden scroll bound in chains with a scarab lock, and the help text confirms it stays locked until free spins.
Wins pay left to right from the first reel on up to 10 lines, and only the best win on each line counts. Coins, coin value and lines can all be changed; at our setting, five coins of 0.02 on 10 lines, a spin cost exactly $1 and one paytable unit was worth 10 cents.
A queen in a gold headdress tops the table: five on a line pay $500 at $1, six in free spins $750, and two already pay $1. The cobra pays $150 for five, the winged scarab and the ankh $50, and each of them pays 40 cents for two. The card ranks need three: A and K pay $12.50 for five, Q, J and 10 pay $10, and three of any rank 40 cents.
After a base-game win you can collect or gamble. There is no bonus buy or ante.

Scroll of Dead bonus features
The golden scarab, wild and scatter
The golden scarab substitutes for every other symbol and also pays anywhere as the scatter: three, four, five or six of them pay 2x, 20x, 200x or 500x the total bet, added to the line wins. Six only fit once the sixth reel opens. Wilds do not take part in wins of the expanding symbol.
Paytable page 1 in our demo session: free spins with the extra reel and the scarab wild scatter paying 2, 20, 200 and 500 times the bet. FluxPlays demo test, 20 October 2026.
Free spins with the sixth reel
Three or more scarabs on any reel start 8 free spins at the triggering bet, with the sixth reel unlocked and a separate set of 10 free-spin lines across all six reels. Three or more scarabs during the round grant more spins.
The special expanding symbol
As the free spins start, one random symbol becomes the special expanding symbol. It can win across reels that are not next to each other, and when it forms a win, every one of it expands to cover its reel. With six reels in play, a symbol that expands on every reel makes six of a kind on all 10 lines.
Paytable page 2 in our demo session: the special expanding symbol in free spins and the cap of 375000 coins. FluxPlays demo test, 20 October 2026.
The gamble
Any main-game win can go on a face-down card: the right colour, a 1 in 2 chance, doubles it, and the right suit, a 1 in 4 chance, quadruples it. You can go up to five times in a row, up to a limit of 2,500 coins. The rules say it does not change the overall RTP, and it is off in Auto Play.
Paytable page 5 in our demo session: the 10 base-game paylines and a separate set of 10 free-spin paylines over six reels. FluxPlays demo test, 20 October 2026.
Max win, RTP and volatility
The paytable caps wins at 375,000 coins, $7,500 at our 0.02 coins or 7,500x the bet. By the paytable, six expanded queens on all 10 lines reach that cap exactly. The help text and paytable state no RTP, and the official page gives none. Review sites agree on 96.28% as the top version and rate the game high volatility; the demo does not show which version it runs.

Played on Play'n GO's official practice demo in one session on 20 October, from a 25,000.00 balance, with no reload or error. The demo shows credits without a currency label; we count one credit as one dollar. Every spin was at 1.00: coins of 0.02, 5 per line, 10 lines; spins started one at a time by a script clicking the spin button, without Auto Play. The gamble was offered after all 40 wins and declined each time. Scroll of Dead has no bonus buy, ante or paid mode. Free spins never triggered, so the unlocked sixth reel and the expanding symbol were not seen. The rules state no RTP, so no version is shown. Totals from the server log: $100.00 staked, $45.70 returned, ending at 24,945.70 to the cent after the last collect. A sample of 100 spins says nothing reliable about the RTP or the volatility.
The demo shows credits with no currency label, and we count each one as a dollar. We played one session on 20 October with no reload, from 25,000.00 at exactly 1.00 a spin. A script started each spin, without Auto Play, and we turned down the gamble after every one of the 40 wins; the next spin collected each of them.
The server log and the screen agree after the last collect: $100.00 staked, $45.70 returned and 24,945.70 in the balance. Base-game wins do not reach the balance when the reels stop: they sit in the Win field, with GAMBLE and COLLECT offered, until you collect or start the next spin.
Wins were small and steady. Of the 40 winning spins, 26 paid under $1, 20 of those the 40-cent minimum, and 86 spins returned less than their cost. The longest losing run was 8 spins, 50 to 57, and the balance sat below its start from spin 1 and finished at its lowest point.
The best spin was 71: several line wins, among them a scarab wild between two cobras on the top row, 285 coins or $5.70, 5.7x the bet.
Base spin 71 of 100 at $1, before collect: a scarab wild between two cobras on the top row, 285 coins, $5.70 for the spin. FluxPlays demo test, 20 October 2026.
Three scarabs never landed together, so the free spins, the unlocked sixth reel and the expanding symbol stayed out of reach, and the cap was never close. With no bonus in the sample, 100 spins cannot measure the RTP or the volatility.
Is Scroll of Dead worth trying?
Scroll of Dead holds its best idea back for the bonus. The base game is a five-reel line slot with a gamble, and only free spins open the sixth reel, so an expanded symbol has six reels to cover and six-of-a-kind lines pay up to $750 at $1. That lifts the cap to 7,500x.
The cost is a quiet base game and a short bonus. The round opens with 8 spins and a single expanding symbol, and everything rests on that draw. Our session never reached it: 100 spins of small line hits. The scarab is the one base-game hope beyond lines, since three anywhere pay twice the bet before the free spins even start, and four pay 20x.
By both games' rules, Book of Dead is the model it builds on: a scatter that is also the wild, one random expander and a card gamble, but on five reels, with 10 free spins and a 5,000x cap. Secret of Dead came next and plays all six reels from the first spin, sets 8 to 15 spins by the number of Ankhs and adds an expander per retrigger, up to nine, for a 10,000x cap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play the Scroll of Dead demo for free?+
Yes. This page loads Play'n GO's practice version without an account. It opens on 25,000 unlabelled credits and a 1.00 bet, shown in the panel as 50 coins: 0.02 a coin, five coins, 10 lines. The sixth reel is chained shut when you start, and every base-game win waits for you to collect or gamble it.
How does the sixth reel work in Scroll of Dead?+
In the base game it is locked behind chains, so the game plays on five reels and 10 lines. Three or more golden scarabs start 8 free spins and unlock it, with a separate set of 10 lines across all six reels. In our 100 spins the scarabs never lined up three at once, so the reel stayed shut.
How is Scroll of Dead different from Book of Dead?+
Both use a wild that doubles as the scatter, one random expanding symbol in free spins and a card gamble. Scroll of Dead adds a sixth reel that only plays in the bonus, gives 8 free spins rather than 10, pays six scarabs 500x the bet and raises the cap from 5,000x to 7,500x.
What does the expanding symbol do in Scroll of Dead?+
When the free spins begin, one symbol is drawn at random. It can pay across reels that are not next to each other, and when it forms a win every copy expands to fill its reel. Wilds do not join those wins. Six expanded queens across all 10 lines would reach the 375,000-coin cap.
What are the RTP and max win of Scroll of Dead?+
The paytable states up to 375,000 coins, $7,500 at 0.02 a coin, 7,500x the bet. No RTP appears in the help, the paytable or on Play'n GO's page; review sites agree on 96.28% as the top version. The practice demo does not show which version it uses, so look at the casino's own game information.
