Our verdict
Book of Dead hangs on one draw: before its 10 free spins one ordinary symbol is picked to expand across its reel and pay on every line, gaps allowed, so a Rich Wilde pick can fill the screen for the 5,000x cap while a card rank needs three reels to pay at all. The base game is plain lines, a wild scatter and a card gamble, there is no buy, and the game itself states no RTP.
Who it suits
Play this if…
- You like free spins built on one random draw: a single symbol that can expand across the screen and pay on all 10 lines
- You want a simple 10-line game with no buy menu or ante to weigh up, and bets from a cent to $100
- You enjoy a double-or-quadruple card gamble after a win, with the choice to leave it alone
Skip this if…
- You want the RTP from the game itself: it states none, and casinos choose between five versions
- You want action between free spins rounds: the base game has lines and a wild scatter only
- You are chasing a top prize beyond 5,000x the bet: the paytable stops at 250,000 coins

Book of Dead: Full Review
Book of Dead is Play'n GO's Egyptian adventure from January 2016, a 5x3 slot with up to 10 lines in which the explorer Rich Wilde hunts a pharaoh's treasure. The Tomb is both wild and scatter, and three of them open 10 free spins in which one ordinary symbol, drawn at random, expands to fill its reel. There is no buy and no ante, so we tested the Book of Dead slot demo the plain way: 100 spins at $1.

What is the Book of Dead slot?
The reels stand in a sunlit Egyptian hall between carved columns, under the Rich Wilde and the Book of Dead logo. Play'n GO's own story sends Rich Wilde to Egypt after Pearls of India and Aztec Idols, and his portrait is the top symbol.
Bets are built from coins: a coin value from 0.01 to 2.00, one to five coins per line and one to ten lines, which always switch on in numbered order. That runs from $0.01 to $100 a spin. The demo opened on exactly $1: coins of 0.02, five per line, all 10 lines.
Wins pay from the left along active lines, and each line pays only its best combination. The paytable counts per coin, so at our bet each unit is worth 10 cents. Five Rich Wildes on a line pay $500, four $100, three $10 and two $1. The Pharaoh mask pays $200 for five, Anubis and Horus $75, and two of any of these three pay 50 cents.
The card ranks need three on a line: A and K pay $15 for five, Q, J and 10 pay $10, and three of a rank return 50 cents. The Tomb is the one special symbol. It stands in for every other symbol as a wild, and as a scatter it pays 2x, 20x or 200x the total bet for three, four or five anywhere, on top of line wins.
The last of our 100 spins at $1: the bottom bar shows credits without a currency sign, 25,032.50 after the final collect. FluxPlays demo test, 19 October 2026.
Book of Dead bonus features
Free spins with a special expanding symbol
Three or more Tombs anywhere open the book and award 10 free spins at the bet and lines of the triggering spin. Before the first, the game draws one ordinary symbol at random as the special expanding symbol for the entire sequence. Card ranks can be drawn as well as Rich Wilde; the rules make no exception for them, although some reviews say the pick is always a higher-paying figure.
Base spin 6 of 100 at $1: three Tombs open the book for 10 free spins, with 200 coins ($4.00) already won on that spin. FluxPlays demo test, 19 October 2026.
Each free spin pays its normal line wins first. Then the special symbol expands to cover all three positions on its reel, but only when that adds a prize on an active line. Once expanded, it pays on every active line with gaps allowed.
The draw shapes the whole round. By the paytable at $1, a 10 expanded on three reels pays 50 cents on each of the 10 lines, $5 for the spin. Rich Wilde pays from two of a kind, so two expanded Rich Wildes already cover every line for $10.
Retriggers
Three or more Tombs during the free spins add another 10, and the symbol drawn at the start stays for the whole sequence. The rules name no limit on extensions.
The gamble
After any main-game win you can stake it on a face-down card: the right colour doubles it, a 1 in 2 chance, and the right suit quadruples it, a 1 in 4 chance. It runs up to five times in a row and up to 2,500 coins, it is off during Auto Play, and the rules say it does not change the overall RTP.
Maximum win, RTP and bets
The paytable promises up to 250,000 coins. At our 50 coins of 0.02 that is $5,000, 5,000x the bet, and the paytable's numbers show where it comes from: a full screen of 15 Rich Wildes, the picture on its first page, pays 5,000 per coin on all 10 lines. Five Rich Wildes on one line are not the cap; at $1 they pay $500.
The first paytable page in our demo session: the Tomb is wild and scatter, and the maximum is stated in coins. FluxPlays demo test, 19 October 2026.
Neither the help text nor the paytable states an RTP, and the official game page lists none. Review sites list 96.21% as the top version, with 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18% versions for casinos to choose from; the demo does not show which one it runs. The same sites rate it high volatility, a label the game never gives.
There is no bonus buy, ante or extra bet mode. The top bet is $100, not the $50 some reviews give.

natural trigger in the session
Played on Play'n GO's official practice demo in one session, from a 25,000.00 balance. The demo shows credits without a currency label; we count one credit as one dollar. The bet was 1.00 throughout: coins of 0.02, 5 per line, 10 lines. Spins 1 to 10 were our setup check at the same bet and count toward the 100; the spins were started one at a time by a script clicking the spin button, without Auto Play, and the gamble was declined after every win. Book of Dead has no bonus buy, ante or paid mode. Free spins triggered once, on spin 6: $35.00 with the $4.00 trigger spin, no retrigger, a single result; the other 99 spins returned $97.50, and $57.00 without spin 22's $40.50 as well. The rules state no RTP, so no version is shown. Totals from the server log: $100.00 staked, $132.50 returned, ending at 25,032.50 to the cent. A sample of 100 spins says nothing reliable about the RTP or the volatility.
We played Play'n GO's official practice demo in one session. It shows credits without any currency label, so we count one credit as one dollar. The balance began at 25,000.00 and the bet at 1.00. Spins 1 to 10 were our setup check, at the same bet in the same session, and count toward the 100.
The game server's log closes to the cent: $100.00 staked, $132.50 back, 25,032.50 at the end on the server and on screen. A win reaches the balance only when you press COLLECT or start the next spin, which collects first. The gamble came up after all 32 wins, the free spins total included, and we collected every time.
Of those 32 winning spins, 16 returned 50 cents and five exactly $1, so 84 of the 100 spins paid back less than they cost. The longest run without a win lasted 10 spins, from 51 to 60.
Three Tombs landed early, on spin 6, and the award screen showed 200 coins, $4.00, won on that spin. The book opened on a blue 10, and a matching 10 badge sat beside the counter on the first free spin.
The first of the 10 free spins from base spin 6, played at the same 50-coin bet as the trigger. FluxPlays demo test, 19 October 2026.
The spins played through on their own after one click and added 1,550 coins. The round closed at 1,750 coins, $35.00 or 35x the bet, a single result, with no retrigger. None of our captures caught a symbol expanding.
Base spin 6 of 100 at $1: the free spins closed at 1,750 coins, $35.00, and we pressed COLLECT rather than GAMBLE. FluxPlays demo test, 19 October 2026.
The biggest win came in the base game on spin 22. A Tomb on reel 1 stood in for a fourth Pharaoh mask beside those on reels 2, 3 and 4, a 2,000-coin line, and 25 more coins came with it: $40.50, 40.5x the bet, another single result.
Spin 22 of 100 at $1, settled: a Tomb as wild and three Pharaoh masks for a 2,000-coin line, $40.50 for the spin, before COLLECT. FluxPlays demo test, 19 October 2026.
That spin set the session high, 25,061.50. The last 78 spins returned $49.00 from 23 wins, the best $15.00 on spin 69. Without the free spins the other 99 spins returned $97.50; without spin 22 as well, the remaining 98 made $57.00 from 30 wins.
We never saw a retrigger, four or five Tombs, five Rich Wildes on a line or anything near the cap, and 100 spins are far too few to measure an RTP or a volatility.
Is Book of Dead worth trying?
Everything rests on one draw. The symbol picked before the free spins decides what the 10 spins can do: a card rank needs three reels before it expands, while Rich Wilde pays from two and can fill every line.
The base game is spare by design: 10 lines, a Tomb that is wild and scatter in one, and the card gamble, with nothing between free spins rounds. In our session most wins were small, and its two big results both came in the first 22 spins.
The missing RTP is a real drawback, since the game states none and the casino picks among five versions. The bet steps, on the other hand, are unusually fine, from a single 0.01 coin on one line up to $100.
Ra vs Osiris uses the same rule, by both games' rules, of a symbol that fills its reel only when that adds a win, but makes it a wild. On its 5x5 grid with 15 lines that wild carries a multiplier of up to 1,000x and works in the base game too, its free spins start at six, it sells bonus buys and its cap is 25,000x.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play the Book of Dead slot demo for free?+
Yes. This page loads Play'n GO's own practice version, with no account and no sign-in. It counts in credits with no currency sign, starting from 25,000, and ours opened on a bet of exactly 1.00: coins of 0.02, five per line, all 10 lines. Every win offers the card gamble beside COLLECT, and the balance only moves once a win is collected.
How is the expanding symbol chosen in Book of Dead free spins?+
At random, from the ordinary symbols, before the first free spin, and it stays for the whole sequence, retriggers included. Card ranks can be drawn as well as Rich Wilde and the Egyptian figures, whatever some reviews say. It expands to fill its reel only when that adds a win, then pays on every active line with gaps allowed. Our one round, from spin 6, paid $35.00 with no retrigger.
What is the RTP of Book of Dead?+
The game does not say: its help text and paytable give no RTP, and neither does Play'n GO's game page. Review sites list 96.21% as the top version and four lower ones, 94.25%, 91.25%, 87.25% and 84.18%, which casinos can choose between. The practice demo does not show which version it runs, so check the game's help at the casino you use.
What is the max win on Book of Dead?+
The paytable says up to 250,000 coins. At our $1 bet of 50 coins worth 0.02 each, that is $5,000, 5,000x the stake. It matches a full screen of Rich Wildes, which pays 5,000 per coin on each of the 10 lines. Five Rich Wildes on a single line are a different thing: 5,000 per coin there means $500 at a $1 bet.
How does the gamble feature work in Book of Dead?+
After a main-game win you can bet it on a face-down card: the right colour doubles it, a 1 in 2 chance, and the right suit quadruples it, a 1 in 4 chance. You can repeat up to five times, up to a 2,500-coin limit, and it is off during Auto Play. The rules say it does not change the overall RTP. We collected every win instead.
