Grim Muerto spreads its value over three small hooks: a highlighted reel that turns a guitar wild into a full column, a Second Chance pick that rescues two-book spins, and 10 free spins with an extra Mariachi wild and up to five expanding reels. Line pays are modest, there is no buy or gamble, and the game states neither its RTP nor its maximum win.

  • You like expanding wilds: a guitar on the highlighted reel fills the whole column

  • You want big line pays: five of the top Mariachi pay 35x the bet

  • You want to buy the bonus or gamble a win: Grim Muerto sells no feature and has no gamble step

Grim Muerto: Full Review

Grim Muerto is Play'n GO's Day of the Dead slot from July 2016: five reels, 20 fixed lines and a skeleton mariachi band in bright festival colours. A highlighted reel turns any guitar wild that lands on it into a full-reel wild, two books offer a Second Chance pick, and three books open 10 free spins with an extra wild. We played the Grim Muerto slot demo for 100 spins at $1.

What is Grim Muerto?

The reels sit in a painted festival stall under a pink Grim Muerto sign, with papel picado colours, skulls and roses all round. Four skeleton musicians lead the paytable: an orange guitarrón player, a purple trumpeter, a green violinist and a pink accordionist.

All 20 lines are always on, and wins pay left to right from the first reel; only the best win on each line counts. Pays are listed per coin, so at our $1, five coins a line at 0.01, one unit is worth 5 cents.

The golden guitar is the wild. It stands in for everything except the book, and two or more wilds on a line pay by themselves: five pay $50. Five of the guitarrón player pay $35, then $25, $20 and $17.50 down to the accordionist, and each Mariachi pays from two of a kind. The card ranks need three: five A, K or Q pay $5, five J or 10 $3.75.

The stake comes from the coin value, 0.01 to 1.00, and the coins per line; at five coins a spin costs $1 to $100. There is no gamble, buy or ante.

Grim Muerto bonus features

Marco Siniestro, the highlighted reel

Before every spin one reel lights up. If a guitar wild lands on it, the wild grows to cover the whole reel, which can complete several lines at once. In free spins two to five reels are highlighted, and both the guitar and the extra wild expand on them; the two wilds cannot land on the same reel.

Books and free spins

The book is the scatter and lands only on reels 1, 3 and 5. Three of them pay 10x the total bet and award 10 free spins at the same bet. The book then reveals one of the high-paying Mariachis as an extra wild for the whole feature, substituting for everything except the scatter.

Candles and retriggers

In free spins a candle scatter takes over. Three candles on reels 1, 3 and 5 retrigger the free spins, and the help text says the round can run on up to the maximum win; one or two candles add 3 or 6 more spins.

Second Chance

When exactly two books land, Second Chance starts: four Mariachi cards are dealt over the reels and you pick one. It can hide an instant prize or the missing book, which starts the free spins.

RTP, volatility and max win

The game states neither an RTP nor a maximum win: the help text only says retriggers run up to the maximum win, and the official page lists neither. The top RTP version on review sites is 96.51%, with 96% on others; their cap is 2,500x the bet, $2,500 at $1. Most rate it high volatility; the demo shows no version or rating.

Played on Play'n GO's official practice demo. The demo shows credits without a currency label; we count one credit as one dollar. Every spin was at 1.00: coins of 0.01, 5 per line, 20 fixed lines; spins started one at a time by a script clicking the spin button, the picks and free spins by click, without Auto Play. Two sessions: after spin 66 the next spin request got a server Internal error that took no stake and played no round; a reload started session 2 at 25,000.00. Session 1 (spins 1 to 66) ends at 25,009.25, session 2 (67 to 100) at 24,979.30, each matching its own server balance and screen. Grim Muerto has no bonus buy, ante, paid mode or gamble. Second Chance came 5 times (200 coins, 1,000 coins twice, the free spins once, nothing once); spin 55's $12.30 is from the server log, not captured. The rules state no RTP, so no version is shown. Totals: $100.00 staked, $88.55 credited. A sample of 100 spins says nothing reliable about the RTP or the volatility.

The demo counts in credits with no currency sign, so we treat each one as a dollar. Its balance began at 25,000.00 with the bet at exactly 1.00: coins of 0.01, five a line, all 20 lines. A script started the spins one at a time, and the Second Chance picks and the free spins were clicks; there was no Auto Play.

The test ran in two sessions. After spin 66 the next spin request met a server "Internal error"; the reply repeated the balance, so no stake was taken and no round played. We reloaded, which starts a fresh 25,000.00, and spins 67 to 100 ran without trouble. Session 1 reconciles to 25,009.25 and session 2 to 24,979.30; together, $100.00 staked and $88.55 returned.

Wins were frequent and small: 53 spins paid, 37 of them under $1, and the longest losing run was 6 spins, 86 to 91. Spin 18 showed the highlighted reel at work, an expanded guitar on reel 1 for $9.50. Spin 55 paid $12.30 in line wins, an amount from the server log that we have no screenshot of.

Second Chance came five times and shaped the session. It paid 200 coins on spin 28, 1,000 coins, $10.00, on spins 40 and 51, nothing on spin 72, and found the hidden book on spin 66. The server's reply already held each award before the pick, so the card chosen made no difference.

The free spins from spin 66 drew the pink accordionist, the lowest-paying Mariachi, as the extra wild. It expanded on highlighted reels several times, and the round closed at 1,315 coins, $13.15 or 13.15x the bet, the best result of the test.

Grim Muerto end of the free spins from spin 66 at a $1 bet: Congratulations, Total Win 1315 coins, the pink Mariachi wild on reel 5Free spin 10 of 10 after base spin 66 at $1: Total Win 1315 coins, $13.15, with the pink Mariachi expanded on reel 5. FluxPlays demo test, 19 October 2026.

That is a single result: without it the other 99 spins returned $75.40 from 52 wins. The five Second Chance rounds together paid $35.45 of the $88.55, and session 2's 34 spins brought back $13.30.

We never landed three books, a candle or a retrigger, so the 10x book pay was not seen either. One hundred spins say nothing reliable about the RTP or the volatility.

Is Grim Muerto worth trying?

Grim Muerto spreads its value across three small hooks rather than one big feature. The highlighted reel can turn a single wild into a full column on any spin, two books are never a dead end thanks to Second Chance, and free spins add an extra wild with up to five expanding reels.

The limits are just as clear. Even the top Mariachi pays $35 for five, the extra wild can be the weakest of the four, and the game states neither its RTP nor its cap, so both rest on outside figures that do not fully agree.

By both games' rules it shares a book scatter and 10 free spins with Book of Dead, but works differently. There the book is also the wild and one random symbol expands across its reel during free spins; here the book is only a scatter, the wilds do the expanding, and Second Chance gives two books another chance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play the Grim Muerto demo for free?+

Yes. This page runs Play'n GO's practice version with no account. It starts with 25,000 credits and no currency sign, on 1.00 a spin: coins of 0.01, five per line, all 20 lines, which the panel shows as a bet of 100 coins. Our session hit a server error once, and a reload simply started a fresh 25,000.

How does Second Chance work in Grim Muerto?+

When exactly two books land, four Mariachi cards appear and you pick one. It can reveal an instant prize or the hidden third book, which starts the free spins. In our 100 spins it came five times: 200 coins, 1,000 coins twice, the free spins once and nothing once. The award was already in the server's reply before we picked.

Does Grim Muerto pay on lines or ways?+

Lines. The help text describes 20 fixed paylines that pay left to right from the first reel, with only the best win per line counted; the book scatter pays anywhere. You cannot switch lines off, so the coin value and coins per line set the bet, $1 to $100 at five coins a line.

What happens in the Grim Muerto free spins?+

Three books pay 10x the bet and award 10 free spins. The book reveals a high-paying Mariachi as an extra wild, two to five reels are highlighted so wilds expand on them, and candles add 3 or 6 spins or retrigger the round. Ours drew the pink accordionist and paid $13.15.

What are the RTP and max win of Grim Muerto?+

Neither appears in the game's help text or paytable, or on Play'n GO's page. Review sites give 96.51% as the top RTP version, some 96%, and put the maximum win at 2,500x the bet, $2,500 at $1. The practice demo does not show which RTP version it runs, so check the casino's game information.
