Starlight Princess

Starlight Princess is Pragmatic Play's 2021 original, not the 1000 or Super Scatter editions that share its name. Its 6x5 grid pays anywhere for eight or more matching symbols, wins tumble away, and winged hearts worth 2x to 500x can land on any spin. Four princess scatters start 15 free spins with a total multiplier, also sold for 100x, and wins stop at 5,000x. For this review we logged 100 spins of the Starlight Princess slot demo at $1, then bought the round once.

What is the Starlight Princess slot about?

The grid floats in a gold frame above the clouds, with a castle tower on the left and the red-haired princess on the right, wings spread and a star wand in hand. Free spins switch to a purple night sky, and lightning strikes as hearts land. A win list on the left names each paying symbol with its count, such as "9 (sun) $10.00".

When a spin stops, the game counts each symbol across all 30 positions, and eight or more of one kind pay in three steps: 8 or 9, 10 or 11, and 12 to 30. Several symbols can pay on the same screen, and their wins are added together. The paytable has no wild.

Four emblems sit at the top. At a $1 bet the sun pays $10, $25 or $50 for those three steps, the winged heart badge $2.50, $10 or $25, the moon $2, $5 or $15 and the star $1.50, $2 or $12. Five gems follow, from the red heart gem's $1, $1.50 or $10 down to the yellow gem's $0.25, $0.75 or $2.

Tumbles after every win

Every win clears its symbols, the rest drop and new ones fall in, with no limit on the number of tumbles. The money reaches your balance only when the whole sequence is over, and that is the moment the hearts below act on.

Winged heart multipliers from 2x to 500x

The multiplier symbols are crowned hearts with wings, in green, blue, pink and gold. They can drop onto any reel during a spin or a tumble, in the base game as well as in free spins, and each takes one of 15 values: 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 12x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x or 500x.

When the sequence ends, every heart still on screen is added up and the sum multiplies the sequence's total win, so a 5x and a 4x make 9x, not 20x. The round winged heart badge in the paytable is an ordinary paying symbol, not a multiplier.

Princess scatters and 15 free spins

The princess is the scatter and lands on all six reels. Four or more anywhere pay 3x the bet for four, 5x for five or 100x for six, and start 15 free spins on special reels of their own. During the round, three or more scatters add 5 more spins.

A total multiplier that waits for new hearts

In free spins the hearts also feed a TOTAL MULTIPLIER panel on the left. When a heart lands and its spin wins, its value joins the total, which stays until the round ends. From then on the total multiplies a win only on a spin where a new heart lands and that spin wins; any other win is paid at its paytable value.

Ante bet and Buy Free Spins

The DOUBLE CHANCE TO WIN FEATURE switch beside the grid raises the bet multiplier from 20x to 25x, $1.25 a spin at a $1 base bet. More scatters then sit on the reels and the chance of free spins doubles, but the buy is switched off. We did not play it: the game server's log shows the ante off on every round.

With the ante off, BUY FREE SPINS starts the round at once for 100x the base bet, $100 at $1. The rules give the base game, the ante and the buy one and the same 96.50% RTP, so neither shortcut costs return on paper.

Maximum win, RTP and bets

Wins stop at 5,000x the bet, $5,000 at $1, and a round that reaches the cap ends there. Bets run from $0.20 to $300, above the $100 or $125 the review sites list. The rules and the intro screen carry a MEDIUM VOLATILITY badge where those sites say high, and we keep the game's own label (what slot volatility means).

Our Starlight Princess demo test

We dropped the opening $2.00 bet to $1.00 and played 100 base spins, each started by a script clicking the spin button rather than by autoplay. Quick spin from around spin 60 changed only the speed.

The base game ran quiet. 36 spins paid: 21 under $1, 14 from $1 to $5 and one above. The longest dry spell lasted 15 spins, from 14 to 28; spin 29 then paid $0.90 and spin 30 cleared 9 suns for $10.00 and 9 moons for $2.00, $12.00 in all. That was a single result: the other 99 spins returned $37.10.

Free spins never started on their own, so we saw no natural trigger, no retrigger and never five or six scatters at once.

The $100 buy landed four scatters, which paid $3.00, and 15 free spins. The TOTAL MULTIPLIER panel climbed to 10x by the last spin, but no retrigger came and the spins added $7.80, for $10.80 in all, 0.11 times the price.

The frame above shows the rule at work. A 5x and a 4x heart landed while the panel read 7x, yet the panel finished the round at 10x, so neither joined the total: a heart counts only on a spin that wins.

Together that is $200.00 staked and $59.90 returned, and the server balance moved from $100,000.00 to $99,859.90, the same as our log. One bought round and 100 spins are far too few to check a 96.50% RTP or the medium badge.

Is Starlight Princess worth trying?

It suits players who want the pay-anywhere tumble formula at a steadier setting. Hearts can multiply a base-game sequence without waiting for the bonus, and the free spins total lasts the whole round. The catch is in the rules: the total only touches spins where a new heart lands in a win, so a high total can still pay little: our panel reached 10x in a round whose spins added $7.80.

Next to Gates of Olympus 2500, which we tested on the same kind of grid, this is the simpler game: one 100x buy instead of four up to 1,250x, one ante instead of three plus two Super Spins, hearts that stop at 500x where those orbs reach 2,500x, and a 5,000x cap against 25,000x. Its rules say medium where 2500's say high.
