Le Bandit

Le Bandit is a Hacksaw Gaming slot from August 2023 in which Smokey the raccoon works a back street on a 6x5 cluster-pays grid. Every win leaves Golden Squares, which three free spins rounds keep for longer, and a Rainbow turns them into coins, clovers and Pots of Gold. Hacksaw rates it 3 out of 5 for volatility, with a 96.34% top RTP and a 10,000x cap. We tested the Le Bandit demo over 100 spins at $1, both buys and both FeatureSpins modes.

What is the Le Bandit slot about?

Smokey Le Bandit, as the rules name him, stands right of the reels in a flat cap and waxed moustache, crowbar in hand, on a sepia street of bins and an old car. Free spins move to a street at night under lanterns, and he puts on a leprechaun hat to match the rainbows, clovers and pots of gold.

Wins need 5 or more matching symbols joined horizontally or vertically. Hacksaw's Super Cascade then clears the winning symbols and every other symbol of the same kind, and new ones drop in until no new win forms. The WILD REWARD poster stands in for every paying symbol.

Symbol pays are small next to the coins. At a $1 bet, five card letters pay $0.10 and 13 or more $15, and the top hat pays $1 to $100, with traps, cheese, beer and baguettes in between. Two of the review sites we checked put the hit rate at 32.47%; 25 of our 100 base spins paid.

Le Bandit was the first of Hacksaw's Le games, and Smokey has come back since: Le Fisherman calls its top bonus Smokey Under Water. This review covers the original game, not Le Bandit Hold & Win, a newer Hacksaw slot with its own rules.

Golden Squares and the Rainbow

After every win, the squares behind the winning symbols turn gold. If a Rainbow is on the grid once the wins are paid, it activates them, and each reveals a coin, or now and then a Four-Leaf Clover or a Pot of Gold. Coins pay multiples of the bet:

• Bronze Coins: 0.2x, 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x or 4x
• Silver Coins: 5x, 10x, 15x or 20x
• Gold Coins: 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x or 500x

Only the bonus rounds keep squares from one spin to the next, so in the base game the Rainbow has to land on the same spin as a win.

Four-Leaf Clovers and Pots of Gold

Each clover then multiplies the coins and pots next to it by x2, x3, x4, x5 or x10. Pots of Gold activate top to bottom and left to right, each collecting every coin and every other pot on the grid. After the last pot, the remaining squares reveal again until no new pot appears.

Luck of the Bandit

Three FS scatters, drawn as instant cameras, award 8 free spins in which the squares stay lit until a Rainbow activates them, so a board can build over several spins. Two scatters add 2 spins and three add 4; Hacksaw's game page says 3, but the in-game rules say 4. Four scatters upgrade the round to All That Glitters Is Gold, with 4 more spins.

All That Glitters Is Gold

Four scatters in the base game award 12 free spins, and the squares stay lit all round, even after a Rainbow has activated them, so each later Rainbow can cash them again. Two scatters add 2 spins and three add 4 here too.

Treasure At the End of the Rainbow

Five scatters at once open the round the intro screen badges as a Hidden Epic Bonus: 12 free spins with squares kept all round, a Rainbow on every spin and no Bronze Coins. It cannot be bought, and we did not see it. The 10,000x cap applies here, in the other rounds and in the base game, and reaching it ends the round.

Bonus buys and FeatureSpins

BUY BONUS opens four cards priced from the bet. Two are bonus buys: Luck of the Bandit at 100x the bet and 96.3% RTP, and All That Glitters Is Gold at 250x and 96.4%.

The other two are FeatureSpins, paid modes that stay on until you press DISABLE. BonusHunt FeatureSpins costs 3x a spin for five times the bonus chance, at 96.28%, and is the only card marked high volatility; the rest say medium. Rainbow FeatureSpins costs 50x a spin for a guaranteed Rainbow, at 96.36%. The rules allow bets of $0.10 to $2,000; the review sites we checked list $100.

Our Le Bandit demo test

We played Hacksaw Gaming's official demo in US dollars from its $5,000 balance, checking every round against the game server's log. The 100 base spins at $1 paid $39.20 from 25 wins. Seventy-five paid nothing, the longest dry run lasted 15 spins, and free spins never triggered.

Twenty of the wins were plain clusters of $0.10 to $0.70, $5.60 in all. The other five came when a Rainbow landed with a win and revealed coins: $8.30, $7.30, $3.00, $5.10 and, on spin 88, $9.90. Those five spins made $33.60 of the $39.20.

We played ten BonusHunt FeatureSpins at $3 after base spin 10. Three paid, $0.50, $0.30 and $1.90, for $2.70 in all, and no bonus came.

After the base spins we played ten Rainbow FeatureSpins at $50. The coins still counted in multiples of the $1 base bet: on the tenth spin, 1x to 4x Bronze Coins and a 25x Gold Coin paid $46.80. By the server log the ten returned $685.90, a single result: spins of $167.80, $164.90 and $156.80 carried it, and the other seven returned $196.40 for their $350.

The $100 Luck of the Bandit buy gave 8 free spins. The squares piled up while little was paid, and the total still read $1.30 as the board below was revealed, with a Pot of Gold at 182 and an x3 clover. The server log puts that one spin at $264.00; the rest of the round paid $14.90, for $278.90 in all.

The $250 All That Glitters Is Gold buy gave 12 free spins. By the server log the first 11 paid $2.90 between them; on the last, a Rainbow cashed the kept squares, with coins up to 50x and two x2 clovers, for $168.00. The round returned $170.90. Neither buy retriggered: the result screens read 8 and 12 free spins played.

The five parts of the session, each on its own line:

It all ran in one demo session, from $5,000.00 to $5,197.60, and the server log totals $980.00 staked and $1,177.60 returned. The rules screen showed the 96.34% version. We never saw natural free spins, a retrigger, the upgrade from Luck of the Bandit or Treasure At the End of the Rainbow, and samples this small cannot measure the RTP or the volatility.

Is Le Bandit worth trying?

The reveal is the reason to play. Every win leaves squares, a Rainbow turns them into coins, and clovers and Pots of Gold can multiply and gather the whole grid, with a fresh reveal after each pot. The bonus rounds are built on keeping those squares, and the 10,000x cap is open to the base game too.

The base game is thin without a Rainbow: five card letters pay a tenth of the bet, and squares do not carry over between base spins. All That Glitters Is Gold costs two and a half times as much as Luck of the Bandit, for 12 spins instead of 8 and squares that survive a Rainbow; in our test the cheaper round paid more.

Check the version before playing for money. Hacksaw ships 96.34%, 94.23%, 92.17% and 88.36% RTP versions, and the game info screen shows which one a casino runs. The volatility rating is 3 out of 5 on Hacksaw's page and the intro meter; the rules give no word label.
